Vertically suspended zen gardens

These beautiful hanging gardens suspended by thin string are a whimsical art installation type project by Fedor in Belgium. Using string, moss, grass, and bowls or a glass reservoir, various types of plants are transformed into mid air planted floating gardens that are a variation of kokedma, a Japanese botanical style. The string gardener says his intention is for the plants to “find their balance” as they grow and become heavy. The string gardens are meant to be viewed at eye level. Some of the plants are covered with moss and placed in a bowl, others are woven into horizontal nets which are covered with moss, clover and grass.

Some string gardens float in their environments alone, some are grouped with others creating a sort of horticultural symphony. They are undeniably gorgeous in their zen quality.

On a practical note: the gardens are irrigated in different ways. Some have built-in glass reservoirs. Others have an artificial root made from different kinds of moss which transports the water to the ball, others a dripping system that keeps the containing net consistently wet. The majority of the plants need watering every three days to stay adequately saturated.
