Cottage retreat on Shelter Island

This beautiful fisherman’s cottage is located on Shelter Island, New York. The cottage, which was built in 1904, has since been renovated by NY-based architects Rhea White and Steve Schappacher of Schappacher White. The homeowners bought the 1,100 square-foot home as a weekend retreat and made the necessary renovations so that it could be utilized throughout the year. Originally they were looking for something more modern but when they saw this cottage they could not resist putting down an offer. The interiors and even the exterior property was repurposed into an amazing retreat and a place for entertaining family and friends.

Throughout the interiors, whites, off whites, and sand colors have been interspersed together to create harmony. Black and natural wood were used to add contrast.

An eclectic mix of modern pieces, antiques, and found objects have been used to decorate the rooms.

French doors were added to the dining room to connect the interior with the exterior. The pergola was an addition to the home as well as a 17-foot fireplace constructed from repurposed bricks collected from a torn down factor in New York City.

This space used to be a garage/tool shed that was reconstructed into a pool room, adding an additional 300 square-feet onto the home.
