Caterpillar House on the Santa Lucia Preserve

By 1 Kind Design  //  Architecture, Eco Design  //  Please Leave a Comment

A spectacular property on softly rolling hills of the Santa Lucia Preserve, Caterpillar House is located in Carmel, California and designed by San Francisco-based firm Feldman Architecture. The design of the home was inspired by the client’s love of modern ranch homes and desires to create a sustainably-conscious home on a beautiful site. The design of the home implements contemporary ranch details such as low and horizontal massing, an open plan design and a strong indoor/outdoor connection, and the kitchen is the core of the home with the main living areas designed around it. The residence is connected to the site by way of excavated earth which has been repurposed for the construction of the walls. The rammed earth walls gently curve in response to the site’s contours and also act as a thermal mass, keeping temperatures regulated from morning to night. Other sustainable features used in the home include rainwater harvesting, photovoltaic panels for all the homes energy requirements and sunshades which expand and contract in response to the climatic patterns.
